Walmart, Amazon stir up holiday price war

Bill Yackey

• 25 Nov 2009

The New York Times reports this morning that Walmart might have met its adversary, at least price-wise. Amazon and Walmart are waging an online price war on products such as movies, books, toys and electronics.

Last month marked the beginning of the war, when the two retailers went back and forth on the prices of new books and DVDs, which later spread to higher-ticket items.

Fiona Dias, executive vice president at GSI Commerce, which manages the Web sites of large retailers, told The New York Times:
It's not about the prices of books and movies anymore. There is a bigger battle being fought. The price-sniping by Walmart is part of a greater strategic plan. They are just not going to cede their business to Amazon.
