Best Buy jumping on the free-delivery bandwagon

Best Buy Co. Inc. is now offering free delivery, haul-away service and no-interest financing on all its home appliance purchases, the company said on its website. The Minneapolis-based electronics retailer also will haul away and recycle old appliances.

Purchases must be more than $429, and consumers must pay for the appliances in full within 18 months of purchase.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers reported that the $300 million Energy Star rebate program generated $1.3 billion in spending on appliances last year.

Lowe's, Sears and the Home Depot are also offering free-delivery and haul-away deals.

Free delivery is what is going to lift on-line, at-home shopping to the next level. Consumers see the savings that on-line shopping gives to retailers - less labor, in store expenses, etc. - and simply want to be compensated accordingly. Eventually all on-line will be delivered free, or for a low nominal flat fee. The retailers will get there eventually. Consumers are already there.
