According to NBBusinessJournal.com, a Canadian entrepreneur is developing an RFID tag for use in big-box retail stores to help customers with product information. The electronic tag would be incorporated into product packaging, allowing the customer to scan it using a smartphone.
Yan Simard, founder and CEO of AirMe, a finalist in the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation's Breakthru business competition, said the product information would download directly from the manufacturer’s web page.
"It has no information in it other than linking you to a web page. It's just a device that takes you to the really useful information," said Simard.
Simard has contacted several marketing firms in New Brunswick, Canada, to discuss plans and investment opportunities.
"We're getting lots of good feedback and visibility even though we haven't launched, so I think that's a good sign the market is ready for this kind of product, said Simard.
Although smartphones currently don’t have the capability to read RFID tags, the technology will be coming very soon, he predicts.
