A specialty food store in Brisbane, Australia, has come up with a way to combat showrooming, and a photo of its strategy has gone viral on Reddit.

According to the Consumerist, the store posted a sign on its door that read:

As of the first of February, this store will be charging people a $5 fee per person for "just looking."

The $5 fee will be deducted when goods are purchased.

Why has this come about?

There has been high volume of people who use this store as a reference and then purchase goods elsewhere. These people are unaware our prices are almost the same as the other stores plus we have products simply not available anywhere else.

This policy is line with many other clothing, shoe and electronic stores who are also facing the same issue.

Daily Finance's Matt Brownell said in the article that the policy is "the most misguided strategy we've seen for dealing with showrooming ... The goal of any retailer should be to impress customers with competitive pricing and great customer service — not treat their customers with suspicion and hostility from the moment they walk in the door."

Really? Charging a fee to shop? why not just hang out a "not welcome" sign? Retailers should embrace users on their terms, and enable them to shop when and where they want. New #CEM platforms do just that: http://amex.co/13rIN5K

This store has hours from 9:30 to 3:00pm weekdays and 9:30 to 12:00 on saturday. Do we see a tread here? Is this a business or a hobby?
