In what is being called "an experiment," Whole Foods has installed an electric car charging station at its store in downtown Austin, Texas.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that the device, which delivers a 110-volt charge, is currently being offered for use at no charge. The retailer does plan to charge for a fill-up at some point in the future.

"We've always thought hard about environmental issues and what we can do to help that," he said. "To me, this is just a no-brainer."

Whole Foods officials couldn't say exactly how much the station cost, but Dixon said the installation expense was less than $2,000, plus the cost of equipment.
