For teens who have a darker aesthetic sense than the average Abercrombie & Fitch customer, Hot Topic comes to the rescue with a dose of mall-based rebellion. Its pseudo-goth, music-themed vibe is winning lots of converts. Hot Topic's February same-store sales jumped nearly 11 percent, an especially impressive showing these days. Two big draws: Online, the "shop by band" feature is loads of fun, while boatloads of "Twilight"-themed tie-ins at the mall and online are attracting substantial fan dollars.
