Hannaford Supermarkets, which operates more than 170 stores in the northeast, has rolled out a new website that not only includes an interactive shopping list tool but uses that tool to notify shoppers if something they purchase gets recalled.
In an interview with the New York Times Union, the company said it opted for gathering less information rather than more: While many grocers are exploring loyalty programs as ways to provide recall alerts, the Hannaford program requires only an email at the time of signup, and no other information is collected.
The new website also provides recipes, health and food safety information and an online pharmacy that allows for refill orders and transaction history. Shoppers can voluntarily create a profile that contains any allergies they may have, and the site will flag them if they attempt to buy products that would be problematic.
