CBGB space going retail

Dec. 16, 2007
It was home to a vibrant and influential music scene for the better part of three decades, but the space that was home to New York's CBGB nightclub is being reborn as a retail boutique. John Varvatos, who headed up the men's wear design department at Calvin Klein in the 1990s, purchased the space and plans to turn it into a designer boutique in 2008.

No word yet on the design aesthetic and whether or not it will hew closely to CBGB's beloved punk ethic; what is clear, though, is that Varvatos did not buy the rights to the CBGB name — which means no branded apparel will be on sale there.
