Launched in 2004, retailer Alex and Ani has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past few years, and as a result, the traffic in its stores was increasing dramatically — which has led it to a mobile solution, according to an announcement from mobile payments solution provider Daily Systems. "What was happening was that we would have 50 people in the store trying to buy products and we had only three point of sale systems to serve them" Alex and Ani CTO Joe Lezon said in the announcement. "You can imagine what that was doing from a wait perspective as well as from a customer service perspective."

According to the announcement, that's when Alex and Ani began exploring the concept of a mobile point-of-sale solution to better serve their customers. It was determined that for any solution to succeed, it was vital to have a mobile point-of-sale device that could fit in the palm of a bartender's hand, be able to swipe credit cards securely, be used to scan bar codes and, a key factor in their decision, had a printer as part of the unit. The retailer selected the Daily Systems iAPS Sled.
As a result of initiating a mobile point-of-sale solution throughout their stores, sales increased 318 percent from same-store sales over the previous year, the announcement said. "There were multiple factors that contributed to that happening," Lezon said. "However, I do believe a significant portion of that increase is due the fact that instead of having three stationary point-of-sales registers checking people out, we now have 28."
The company also said that a holiday wait time of an hour and half was reduced to less than 15 minutes — and that was with an increased traffic flow.
