Amazon closing down US restaurant food delivery service

June 11, 2019

Omnichannel retailer Amazon plans to close its 4-year-old Amazon Restaurants delivery service by the end of June.

The announcement comes six months after Amazon shuttered the same program in London, according to a Geek Wire report.

Initially, the service debuted in Amazon's hometown of Seattle and then launched in nearly two dozen cities and was aimed at Amazon Prime members using the retailer's restaurant website or PrimeNow app. Amazon is also closing its 3-year-old workplace lunch service, Daily Dish, according to the report.

"As of June 24th, we will discontinue the Amazon Restaurants business in the U.S.," an Amazon spokesperson said in an email interview. "Many of the small number of employees affected by this decision have already found new roles at Amazon, and others will be provided personalized support to find a new role within, or outside of, the company."

Prior to Amazon Restaurants and Daily Dish, the retailer has launched a takeout service via its Amazon Local app. Both that service and the app were discontinued.
