Amazon is planning a music streaming service for Prime subscribers

May 30, 2014

Consumers have gotten used to the business model pioneered by companies such as Spotify — you can listen as much as you want to all of the music in their huge library, including brand new releases, and if you want to listen without ads, you can pay a fee for a premium account.

According to Buzzfeed, Amazon is planning a streaming music service for launch this summer, but it appears to be modeled after its existing streaming video service associated with Prime memberships — members get no-additional-cost access to a curated library of music, without new releases.

The report says the online retailer has secured licensing deals with Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, two of the "big three" labels. No word on the third, Universal Music Group. Music offered to members will be at least six months old.
