Amazon rolls out response to PayPal with 'Login and Pay'

October 9, 2013

Capping off a day packed with payment news came yesterday's launch of Login and Pay with Amazon, the Internet giant's plan to share its 215 million active account holders (in other words, customers) with other businesses.

Login and Pay allows participating companies to utilize Amazon customers' account information to shorten the payment process down to "just a few clicks."

"Login and Pay with Amazon enables companies to make millions of our customers their customers by inviting online shoppers with Amazon credentials to access their account information safely and securely with a single login," said Tom Taylor, VP of Amazon Payments.

Amazon said the service will help businesses create a more personalized buying experience for their shoppers while also removing the burden of shoppers needing to register on multiple websites.

The solution could lead to customer service improvements such as managing and tracking orders, purchase history detail, special discounts, and instant access to shipping addresses and payment methods, Amazon said.

Login and Pay with Amazon works on tablet, mobile, and desktop devices. Online merchants get fraud protection from Amazon at no extra charge, and Amazon said it does not share the customers' credit card information.

Developers can implement Login and Pay with Amazon, which uses the OAuth 2.0 protocol, with existing websites using a set of widgets and APIs to embed on the site and integrate with back-end systems.
