Blockbuster, which was recently acquired by satellite operator DISH Network, announced today that it's lowering the prices of thousands of videos to compete with kiosks, including redbox and BLOCKBUSTER Express kiosks owned by NCR.
Starting Friday, thousands of the video stores' selections will be 99 cents. Newer movies — many of which can't be rented at kiosks or from Netflix until 28 days afterBlockbuster offers them for rent — will cost $2.99 for the first day. Other new releases will be $1.99 for the first day — 99 cents after that.
"Our customers are seeking a better value — we've answered with new pricing and the flexibility of single day rentals," Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster, said in the announcement.
