Caldor chain founder dies at 101

January 13, 2022

Carl Bennett, who along with his wife, Dorothy, founded the Caldor Discount Stores chain, has passed away at the age of 101.

The couple started with one store, with an $8,000 investment, in Westchester, New York and developed the business into a 100-outlet venture that hit $1 billion in sales, according to a New York Times report.

The family sold the chain in 1981. As of that time there were 100 Caldor outlets in seven states.
