Company providing hardware, software to turn iPads into kiosks

April 3, 2012

Streamzap, founded in 2000, is hoping to provide retailers with the tools to turn iPads into self-service kiosks. It says it is the only company to design and produce both a retail-ready iPad enclosure as well as the iPad App needed to lock down the iPad, in a recent company press release. The result is hardware and software that work well together.

The first step, according to Streamzap, in creating a kiosk from a tablet is to mount the tablet using SafeCase, a rugged aluminum mount that prevents customers from accessing or tampering with the iPad or its settings. The customer sees only the touchscreen and may not even realize there is an iPad inside.

Only authorized managers can access the tablet via lock and key, in order to set up Wi-Fi and any needed apps.

The next step, according to Streamzap, is to provide an app for customers to use. Streamzap also makes LocPad, an iPad Web browser app that is specially designed to prevent customers from surfing the Web to check their email or load Facebook. With LocPad, retailers specify a home page and a white list of websites that the customer is allowed to visit. All other websites are disallowed.

The SafeCase enclosure costs $195, and the LocPad App is $9.99.
