Walmart may have paid bribes worth millions of dollars in India, according to a Wall Street Journalreport that said while a federal probe into allegations of widespread corruption in Walmarts in Mexico didn’t yield much evidence in the way of major offenses, investigators have found evidence of bribery in India. Allegations include that local officials there may have received relatively small payments. The retail giant is likely to face U.S. foreign-bribery charges under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act over those payments, according to the article.
Walmart spokesman Greg Hitt declined comment except to say that the company is "cooperating fully with the government in this matter."
A Justice Department spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal that, "We have an active ongoing FCPA investigation and will decline to comment further."
