Gap issues statement on Nepal earthquake disaster

Gap is matching funds of any eligible Gap employee who donates to the Mercy Corps.

April 27, 2015

Gap Inc. is matching funds of any eligible Gap employee who donates to the Mercy Corps in response to the tragic earthquake that recently hit Nepal and the surrounding area. The company release said there were some internal and industry concerns about whether the earthquake, which is reported by multiple media outlets to have claimed the lives of over 3,000 persons, may have resulted in structural damage in some Bangladesh garment factories.

"Gap Inc. and our employees extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and the families of all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal, and those impacted across South Asia," a company statement said.

The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, of which Gap is a founding member, is working in close consultation with Gap's team on the ground, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and the Government of Bangladesh to ensure that all workers are safe, according to the release.
