Gildan Activewear buying HanesBrands for $2.2B

Gildan Activewear is acquiring HanesBrands in a $2.2 billion deal.
Gildan will own household brands including Hanes and Maidenform with the acquisition, according to an AP report. Gildan is the owner of Gildan, American Apparel and Peds brands.
The news comes on the heels of HanesBrands struggling for several years without an annual profit in the past four years.
HanesBrands sold its Champion brand last year to Authentic Brands Group for more than $1 billion.
"As part of Gildan, HanesBrands will benefit from an even stronger financial and operational foundation that will provide new growth opportunities — helping to power further innovation, a broader product offering and greater reach across channels and geographies," HanesBrands Chairman Bill Simon said in a statement, according to the news outlet.
