Home Depot will increase its average hourly starting salary to $15 an hour with an investment of $1 billion.

The pay boost, which went into effect earlier this month, includes hourly workers in the U.S. and Canada, according to an NBC News report.

The news comes on the heels of other retail giants, including Walmart and Amazon, increasing the hourly wage. Walmart's stands at $17.50 and Amazon is increasing delivery and warehouse hourly pay to $19 an hour. Target has also boosted hourly pay with an investment of $300 million.

Home Depot CEO Ted Decker, in an email to its workforce, said the increased wage will enhance the customer experience as well as hold, attract and retain staff.
