Inflation impacting Thanksgiving shopping

A hefty number of U.S. consumers, 87%, report inflation will impact Thanksgiving shopping with more than half, 58%, describing the impact as moderate or significant.
When it comes to shopping for supplies, 90% expect to hit a store and 21% expect to shop online.
Those are findings from a Numerator survey of 1,000 consumers on Thanksgiving celebration plans, spending and potential inflation impacts, according to a press release.
Additional findings include:
- To offset inflation, 64% of consumers will buy items on sale, 42% plan to use more coupons, 32% will switch to store brands, 27% will change their menus to be more budget-friendly, 19% will buy smaller items and 17% will shop at dollar stores.
- Turkey tops the list of planned purchases, with 57% of consumers planning to buy. Turkey is followed by side dishes (53% of consumers), desserts and candy (46%), fruits and vegetables (46%), snacks (35%) and paper and disposable products (34%).
- Boomers are significantly more likely to be the turkey buyer this year, with 63% planning to buy, compared to 58% of Gen X and 46% of Gen Z and millennials.
