Kroger ending unmanned vehicle delivery pilot

March 19, 2019

Kroger is planning to shut down a pilot grocery delivery effort featuring self-driving vehicles.

The program, which began late summer 2018, involved a Scottsdale, Arizona Fry's store (owned by Kroger). Delivery was provided via unmanned vehicles from Nuro, a robotics company, according to a USA Today report. During the pilot more than 2,000 deliveries were made.

"During this pilot, it was learned that we can deliver a service that our customers love — providing convenience and fresh groceries for our customers safely in the communities," Pam Giannonatti, a Kroger spokeswoman, told USA Today.

Kroger and Nuro are getting ready to launch another autonomous program at two Houston-based Kroger locations, according to the report.
