Staff at Apple's Grand Central Apple store in New York City are looking to form a union and are collecting signatures to file a petition.
How many employees are involved is not known but 30% of workers need to sign on in order for the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election, according to a CNN report. The news outlet cited a person familiar with the matter as its source and also cited the Washington Post as the initial news source.
The employees are teaming up with Workers United, part of the Service Employees International Union. It is the same organization supporting Starbucks' union efforts, according to CNN.
The organizers have created a website called Fruit Stand Workers United which states the following: "Apple has grown to be the most valuable company in the world. Why should its retail workers live precariously? We cannot live at the whims of Apple's generosity. We can't bet our futures on luck. If Apple's goal is 'To leave the world better than we found it,' then they need to hold themselves to a higher standard."
