The retailer Kmart has just three locations operating in the U.S. after closing a New Jersey store on April 16.

Kmart once had well over 2,000 U.S. stores, according to a New York Post report, and sells celebrity brands from Jaclyn Smith to Martha Stewart. It is known for its Blue Light Special in-store marketing campaigns that alerts shoppers about a store sale.

"Kmart was part of America," Michael Lisicky, an author who has written books on U.S. retail history, told the news outlet. "Everybody went to Kmart, whether you liked it or not. They had everything. You had toys. You had sporting goods. You had candy. You had stationery. It was something for everybody. This was almost as much of a social visit as it was a shopping visit. You could spend hours here. And these just dotted the American landscape over the years."

It was 20 years ago when the retailer first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and shuttered over 200 stores.
