Primark in has introduced self-checkout machines in its store in the Fishergate Centre, joining a growing number of U.K. locations adopting the technology, according to a Lancashire Post report.

While some shoppers welcomed the quicker and easier process, others have expressed concerns about the limited number of traditional tills and the inability to pay with cash, according to the news outlet.

Primark expects the self-checkouts to reduce waiting times by 70%, improve efficiency and provide a more convenient shopping experience. However, the transition has led to longer queues for the remaining staffed check-outs, where returns and exchanges are handled.

Despite the changes, Primark assured customers staff, which previously operated the tills, will be transitioned to other roles within the store, and the company is recruiting for additional staff to meet increased demand during the upcoming busy season.

"We've installed self-service checkouts across a small selection of stores as part of a trial to understand how they can work for both our customers and our business," a Primark spokesperson told the news outlet.
