Retail's new motto: Many happy returns

December 28, 2008

The News & Observer (N.C.): Employing new technology and softening some return policies, cash-strapped retailers are intent on making the returns process as pleasant as possible.Take, for instance, Target's policy on returns where the shopper paid cash.Starting in 2006, Target allowed shoppers to return up to $100 worth of goods twice a year for store credit. But that limit was dropped to $40, then $20 and then was revised again this year to $35.

"There's so much organized retail crime that we had to protect ourselves as a company, so putting the limits in place was necessary," said Target spokesman Dave Fransen. But "we increased it this summer because we have a base interest in making our guests happy."
