More than half (61%) of consumers plan to get their holiday shopping done before Thanksgiving and even more (67%) plan to hit retail stores during slow time frames to limit potential exposure to COVID-19.

Those are top findings from an Engine Insights study on how the ongoing coronavirus and Delta variant pandemic are impacting shopping habits this holiday season.

"Our data shows that holiday shoppers' habits are changing, and in turn retailers will have a lot to consider this season. COVID will no doubt have a direct impact on store traffic, as 67% plan to shop in stores on less busier days or times this year to limit potential exposure," Don Simons, CEO of Engine Insights, said in a press release on the findings.

"Beyond this, concerns over supply chain disruptions and inventory shortages will loom large, as half of holiday shoppers indicate they will begin earlier this year to avoid being shut out from completing their list in time. The thrill of the chase will also be a factor, as shoppers are more determined than usual (60%) to find that 'perfect gift' this year, and in some cases more willing to stretch the budget to get the most important items on their list (51%). There could very well be an emotional element to this as well, as nearly half (47%) plan to start their shopping earlier than usual in 2021 to get into the 'holiday spirit' sooner."
