The U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a federal government agency, is revamping its system to process refunds related to the tariffs imposed by President Trump over the past 15 months.

The agency, according to a Wall Street Journal report, has collected approximately $166 billion since tariffs began in January 2025. The task of refunding the levies, which were ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court earlier in February, could require 4.4 million of staff hours.

The agency told the Court of International Trade its current systems can't handling the refund project and it must revamp its internal system to comply with an order to refund the reciprocal tariffs, according to a CNBC report.

The court's order to issue refunds comes on the heels of a lawsuit from an importer.
