US shoppers lead in-store shopping

Along with expectations around self-service, digital payment and interactive experiences, research shows that U.S. shoppers lead the world in returning to in-store shopping. A majority of American shoppers also report valuing brands that prioritize sustainability, while global habits continue to evolve in the wake of pandemic lockdowns easing, supply chain issues and other global factors, according to a report by Mood Media.

U.S. consumer research highlights from the report include:

  • 48% of American shoppers go to in-person shopping more than they did 2 years ago as opposed to 38% global average.
  • 84% say stores with a pleasant atmosphere are most likely to drive repeat visits; 90% declare it makes them stay longer.
  • 70% say being a sustainable practice and/or selling sustainable products is important to them when choosing to visit a physical store.
  • 55% say this (sustainable factor) would also make them more likely to want to buy something.
  • Engaging digital content and personalized experiences have the highest impact on US consumers' purchasing decisions.
    • 31% report that engaging digital content makes them want to buy something in-store.
    • 40% report that personalized experiences make them want to make an in-store purchase.

Global consumer research highlights from the report include:

  • 57% of global consumers now expect stores to invest in digital payment and self-service technology.
  • 55% expect to see interactive screens to explore and customize services or products.
  • 48% expect stores to showcase engaging large video displays.
  • 45% say their desire to shop in-store is rooted in getting their hands on purchases instantly.
  • 38% enjoy the element of discovery when shopping brick and mortar.
