The top 10% of U.S. households in terms of earnings are accounting for nearly half of today's consumer spend, according to a Moody's Analytics report.

That top 10% of households are defined as earning $250,000 or more and their growing spend share is a record setter, beating out a record established in 1989, according to a Fox Business News report.

Spending by the top 10% equals at least one-third of the U.S. gross domestic product.
