Walmart has filed trademarks that indicate it aims to create and sell virtual goods as well as develop a virtual currency and non-fungible tokens called NFTs.
The seven applications were filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in late December, according to a CNBC report.
The retailer declined to comment to CNBC but said in a statement it is "continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences."
One trademark attorney described the filings as "super intense," and showing a great deal of planning, according to the news report.
The news comes as many retailers are jumping on the virtual product/NFT bandwagon, including Gap and Under Armour.
