Tesco, a British-based international grocery and general merchandising retail chain, has begun to lay claim to a portion of the U.S. retail space by bringing over its small-format, self-checkout-only grocery stores. Starting in 2007 and continuing into 2008, Tesco opened them at a pace of one every two and a half days. Shoppers have been elated, with as many as 90 percent of its customers indicating they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the checkout experience. Though the economy has slowed Tesco’s U.S. growth, it currently has more than 100 stores in operation, with more on the way.
