Not all that many years ago, many shoppers hesitated to use self-checkouts because they were unfamiliar. But as more people have tried them — some surveys indicate that more than 90 percent of respondents have used self-checkout technology — they’ve come to appreciate the shorter lines and control of the transaction. And selfcheckout is expanding to other areas of the store: IBM’s AnyPlace checkout system enables stand-alone units to be placed in areas such as deli, floral or prepared foods.
