Starbucks was offered as the epitome of the customer experience. Starbucks is known as much for its atmosphere — a comfortable "third place" for customers to relax between work and home — as for its coffee. However, Starbucks’ middling placement on this list may stem from lackluster customer service over the past few years. Recent efforts have sought to refocus on the customer experience; baristas are being retrained not only on how to make a perfect shot of espresso, but on how to connect more genuinely with customers.
