The old-fashioned payment plan is being revived. In recent years, Kmart was one of the only retailers offering layaway. But for the 2008 Christmas season, marked by tightened credit and a bleak economic outlook, other retailers — namely TJ Maxx, Goody’s, Marshalls and Burlington Coat Factory — began offering the plan. As consumers continue worrying about additional debt, layaway could have a place in retail for years to come.
