The history-making 2008 presidential election made waves in the fashion world, too. Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin turned heads with her rimless Kazuo Kawasaki glasses; sales reportedly quadrupled following the convention. First lady Michelle Obama wore an off-the-rack print dress from White House/Black Market when she appeared on “The View,” and nearly overnight the $148 dress sold out. And on Inauguration Day, when daughters Malia and Sasha wore colorful ensembles from crewcuts, J. Crew’s children’s line, the retailer’s Web site crashed as online shoppers scrambled to snap up the outfits.
