Now that CVS gobbled drug middleman Caremark in 2007 and West Coast regional Longs Drug Stores in 2008, the new CVS/Caremark is not only the largest U.S. pharmacy, it's in the top 20 of all U.S. companies, period. CVS has honed its acquisition chops since the 1980s, but its most recent deals may have left it overextended during a punishing recession, though sales have remained strong. With 6,900-plus retail stores, customer response has been favorable as the convenience factor has increased.
