Apple and its iTunes store pleased a lot of customers in 2008 when it finally dropped its digital rights management (DRM) restrictions on most of its song files. The move allowed iTunes customers to play their downloaded music on any portable music device or computer. It wasn’t all fun for iTunes in 2008, though, as Apple threatened to shut down its store after the National Music Publishers’ Association wanted its royalty rates to be increased by 66 percent. After a hearing by the Copyright Royalty Board, Apple won out and its iTunes store continues to lead the digital downloads market.
