The store-within-a-store picked up steam in 2008. One of the largest examples was the Rock Band 2 popup store at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square. The 550-foot area housed Rock Band merchandise, interactive kiosks and customized displays. The store also included a mini-performance area where customers could try the game out for themselves. These stores allow companies to push products for a limited time, usually in a highly visible area. Some pop-up shops are located outside of a store’s regular location. JCPenney had previously built a pop-up location in Times Square.
