To no one's surprise, a struggling economy, coupled with double-digit unemployment, has kept U.S. consumers on a perpetual bargain hunt. As consumers flock to the best bargains on everything from essentials to vacation travel, jewelry and concert tickets, retailers had little choice but to continually trim prices in an effort to drive demand. Analysts warn that retailers who offer heavy discounting year-round fail to create a compelling experience for their customers and risk permanent damage to their brand.
