Employing new technology and softening some policies, cash-strapped retailers were intent on making the returns process as pleasant and easy for customers as possible. Target lets customers return up to $70 worth of goods for store credit without a receipt. Sears normally allows only 90 days to return most items, but last year allowed 120 days for goods purchased in the holiday season. Gift receipts, given to customers upon purchase, also made returns easier for their recipients.
