The number of people turning to the Web for coupons soared to 36 million last year, an increase from 10 million people in 2005. In early 2008, AOL launched Shortcuts, its free service for paperless online coupons. The first retail partner to endorse the program was The Kroger Co., the largest pure grocery chain in the United States, with 2,487 stores in 31 states under local brands such as Kroger, Ralphs, King Soopers and Fry’s. General Mills, Kimberly-Clark and Kraft also signed on to participate with coupons for their popular consumer brands. And in October, SmartSource published a print coupon with an invitation to text a code to receive an exclusive mobile coupon.
