Loyalty programs are nothing new, but their importance is more obvious than ever as retailers look for ways to compete other than on price. In one case, data from a loyalty program helped warehouse retailer Costco warn loyalty customers who had previously purchased Clif Bars that the product had been recalled as part of a growing salmonella scare.
