In addition to scaling down store footprints for entry into urban markets and placing Web-enabled workstations in its aisles to attract more sophisticated consumers, Walmart has set its sights on making its entire operation greener. The world’s largest retailer early this year introduced a new plan enlisting its 2 million employees; 100,000 global suppliers and a consortium of NGOs, scientists and other businesses to rate the sustainability of every product it sells.
