Grocer, Aldi, has opened a location less than a mile from Walmart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas as part of its national expansion to have 2,500 stores operating within three years.
One local industry watcher believes the German discount retailer poses a "significant threat," to the nation's largest retailer, according to a CNN report.
Annibal Sodero, a former assistant professor of supply chain management at the University of Arkansas, told CNN that Aldi is "very well positioned to gain market share in the short run."
The report noted that other top grocers, including Kroger and Costco, have not opened locations near Walmart's headquarters.
