Amazon's quest to make its Kindle the "one media device to rule them all" got a little bit more aggressive today: It opened its Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which it says contains thousands of books that Kindle users can read at no charge.
According to a front-page post from Jeff Bezos, the Lending Library is a free feature exclusive to members of Amazon Prime, the $79-a-year club that also gives users unlimited free shipping as well as access to the company's library of streaming movies and television shows. The Library includes "over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers."
Some of the titles mentioned for the launch include "Water for Elephants," "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," and "Fast Food Nation."
Users of the Lending Library can "check out" one book at a time from it, and there are no due dates or late fees.
