Amazon's adoption of robotics could end up replacing more than half a million jobs with robots in the coming years.

In the more immediate future Amazon expects to stem hiring by more than 160,000 workers in the U.S. within two years, according to a New York Times report.

The omnichannel retailer's U.S. workforce numbers about 1.2 million and according to an Amazon statement the company is aiming to hire 250,000 workers for the holiday season. Amazon declined to state how many of those jobs are full-time, according to the news report.

The news comes on the heels of Amazon's most advanced warehouse opening in 2024 which has a thousand robots handling fulfillment. The warehouse strategy is being expanded to nearly four dozen fulfillment centers by 2027, according to the news report.

Amazon has steadily been developing proprietary robots to do specific jobs. Hercules handles heavy carts, Pegasus sorts packed orders and then there are many robotic arms in play such as Robin and Sparrow, according to another New York Times report.

The company's Fulfillment Technology and Robotics team has designed, manufactured, and deployed the world's largest fleet of more than750,000 industrial robots, according to a company blog published in April.
