Asda, a U.K. supermarket chain, has launched a pilot program featuring an automated free sample vending machine at its Pilsworth, Bury location.
This "first to market innovation," as described by the retailer, allows shoppers to receive free samples by scanning their Asda Rewards loyalty app, according to a report by The Grocer.
Müller is the first brand participating, offering samples of its Frijj drink. The program is managed by LS Eleven Media Services, Asda's retail media arm. LS Eleven offers brands the opportunity to showcase products and content on digital screens integrated with the vending machine, providing campaign management and post-campaign reporting.
While new to Asda, similar automated sampling machines have been used in U.S. supermarkets by companies like Freeosk for several years, with reported sales lifts exceeding 50% for participating brands. Asda's revamped retail media offering, launched last year in partnership with SMG, aims to leverage customer data from its Asda Rewards program to provide more targeted and effective advertising opportunities for brands.
