Back-to-school study finds parents looking harder for sales, savings

July 11, 2016

It may be nearing mid-summer, but parents are already preparing for the back-to-school/college season in a different way than years past. According to a study cited in an articlepublished by the National Retail Federation, parents with children in either kindergarten, primary, high school or college are waiting to shop until later and are working harder to find savings and sales.

Although the study found that 54 percent of households with kids in school planned to spend the same as last year, it also revealed that fully 28 percent of parents with school-age kids plan to use more coupons than last year for back-to-school shopping. And about a quarter of those polled said they'll be looking in ad circulars and newspapers for deals.

The article said that 28 percent of parents of college students are planning to purchase more store brand and generic products to save cash, while 30 percent will shop for sales and 21 percent will use more coupons.
