Big Tesla fan in line to get free Model X courtesy of unique referral contest

Bjorn Nyland, a rabid Tesla Motors' customer, says he'll offer test rides once he claims his free prize.

Tesla Motors’ word-of-mouth customer-engagement contest is birthing its first winner as Bjorn Nyland, a Model S owner famous for his passion for all things Tesla, is a soon-to-be proud owner of a free Model X.

As RetailCustomerExperience reportedtwo weeks ago, Tesla is running a unique customer referral initiative as a way to drive sales and save money on marketing.

The contest offered sedan owners who refer 10 viable actual buyers a chance to buy a limited-edition "Founders Series” Model X at a much discounted price. The car is heading into production this fall. In addition, the very first Model X owner to refer the successful sale of 10 cars will get a Model X for free. That’s the award Nyland is hoping to claim.

Nyland crafted a videoabout the referral experience. The one hiccup may be if Nyland’s car purchase referrals don’t come through and if any of the 10 don’t accept delivery of the cars, according to a LearnBondsreport. Nyland said he had four verified buyers when he recorded the video on Aug. 10.

Nyland told viewers he’ll likely be setting up public events with the new car once he takes ownership and offers test drives.
