Boozy St. Pat celebrants love to shop

What are St. Patrick's Day shoppers looking for when shopping? Shoes.

March 14, 2016

St. Patrick's Day isn't on par with some lucrative retail holidays such as Valentine's Day, in terms of sales and revenue, but consumers celebrating the Irish spirit are responsible for a $4.4 billion economic boost on the holiday and retailers can thank the liquor industry.

That's because consumers imbibing are projected to spend at least $35 on average while shopping, according to a National Retail Federation survey. The survey states 125 million citizens observe the holiday and, of that figure, 31.3 percent plan to make a dinner, 28.7 percent head to a bar or restaurant and 21.1 percent head to a private party.

What are St. Patrick's Day shoppers looking for when shopping? The top item is shoes, according to Finder.com data, as reported by Media Post. The next popular shopping item is cigarettes. The data reveals millennials are the busiest shoppers on the day and spend about 75 percent more than Generation X consumers and 40 percent more than Baby Boomers.
